Quest for quality by companies and suitable exchange rate along with promotional activities have seen a rise in imports of Egyptian cotton to US $2.43 million compared to $1.05 million last year registering growth of 132 percent.
Import of fabric shot up by 119.7 percent whereas the value of cotton thread rose by 37.8 percent to 1.5 million from 1.1 million last year.
Demand for quality products has helped import volume a great deal since Egyptian fibres are long or extra long creating very fine threads leading to softer fabrics.
According to Mohamed Bakri Agami, the Egyptian consul in Sao Paulo, Brazilian textile companies are looking to produce high quality products driven by buyers' demand that has ultimately given Egyptian cotton an edge over others.
Favourable exchange rate has further helped the cause as import is possible at reasonable prices, believes Abel Ashmawi, Director of Lotas, foreign trade company in the import export business.
