African farmers may appeal against WTO as talks fail

After the failure of negotiations with rich countries at World Trade Organization (WTO) over the issue of agricultural subsidies including cotton, African farmers have warned that they could present their demand against it to defend their interest.

Benin's Ambassador to Geneva Samuel Amehu said that he along with other cotton producing countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Chad are going to appeal against the discriminate subsidies which penalize their farmers.

Pascal Lamy, General Director, WTO, had a meeting with these countries, where he appealed them to realise what was at stake and avoid blame game.

Lamy finally announced the suspension of the negotiations saying that the atmosphere was not conducive to talks right now.
