Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) is scheduled to be restructured as Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in a meeting has given nod to the proposal of making the PCCC more competent, viable and independent institution for better growth, marketing and manufacturing of cotton.
According to Aziz, rationale behind this move is to enhance the production capacity of the farmers and thus increasing their income, which is possible only if there are better seeds, crop pattern and facilities to curb crop diseases.
He emphasized the fact that a good cotton crop has a multi dimensional effect on economy as the people associated with this industry are in large chunk.
He has asked PCCC to link the upgrading of Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI), Multan to an international institute and further getting in collaboration with international research institutes.
Aziz has called on the growers, ginners, spinners and the textile mills to increase the level of cooperation among them to adapt themselves according to the world market.
PCCC is going to seek the approval of National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), which has developed variety of seeds, plans to bring 25 percent of land area under Bt Cotton by 2009-10.
