Cotton farmers alive next to hope

Doha round has now been suspended indefinitely.

Matters could become even worse when the US Farm Bill is revised in 2007.

Cotton production is not profitable for the Americans.

American cotton farmers have received about US $1 billion in assistance between 2004 and 2005 while producers in sub-Saharan Africa lost nearly $450 million.

Ultimately, decreasing cotton revenues may also affect the quality of crops produced in Africa.

Burkina Faso's government had kept the price of 50 kilogram's of chemical fertilizer at about $25 but this is still beyond the reach of many farmers.

Farmers cannot find something else to replace the cotton, or else many would have done so.

Many had turned to cereals but the price of these products has also fallen.

African farmers are basically living hope against hope.
