Sharp fall in demand affects cotton imports

Demand for Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton dropped significantly in 2006, with the imports falling to 1,464 bales from 36,000 bales in first half of last year.

During the January-June 2006 period, imports recorded a year-on-year plunge of around 40.7 percent to 82,032 bales.

Upland cotton imports also registered over 20 percent slide to touch the 80,524 bales mark.

The US remained the top supplier at 65,074 bales. Meanwhile, exports reached 9,156 bales during the period.
