Coimbatore administration is encouraging cultivation of cotton as city is textile hub and most of local textile units have to source cotton from neighboring states at higher prices.
Administration also suggested going for contract farming as it is viable and beneficial for cotton growers.
As per district estimation, there is about 6,000 hectares of land under cotton, of which 10 percent is under contract farming.
District administration and cotton traders have formed committee to increase cotton production, mainly through cotton farming.
