Cotton import shows an upswing

During the month of July, spinners of Thailand imported 203,033480 pound bales of cotton, largest since June, 2005 when it stood at 265,508 bales.

Reduced purchases from Thai spinners meant that the total purchase for 2005-06 season reached 1,888,311,480 pound of bales, a decline compared to previous year.

Import was mainly from markets like United States (60,774 bales), Australia (56,160 bales), Burkina Faso (12,575 bales), Mali (11,216 bales) and India (12,189 bales) with significant decrease in imports from US in 2006. The import from US dived 40 percent at 517,111480 pound bales.

India was placed at third spot with imports shooting up by 134.6 percent to 129,452480 pound bales. Other prominent exporters to Thailand included African Franc Zone, Brazil, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
