Cotton growers will have a golden opportunity to get a glimpse of some new varieties from D&PL, Bayer, Dow Agro-Science and DynaGro in this year Sunbelt Expo, which is scheduled from October 17 to 19 in Moultrie, Ga.

Growers will feast on some traditional Roundup Ready cotton as well as some of the Roundup Ready Flex cotton that has been displayed earlier as well.

As always, the University of Georgia Cotton Team will conduct trials across a broad range of disciplines in the Sunbelt Ag Expo to find solutions to problems that are depriving growers of yields and profits in Roundup Ready Flex cotton.

Agronomic experiments conducted this year by the University of Georgia Cotton Team evaluated various mepiquat chloride regimes like a new mepiquat-based plant growth regulator.

Other studies are focusing on control systems for tropical spiderwort, a troublesome weed which is assuming epidemic proportion throughout the south Georgia cotton-producing region.

Specific studies on soil fertility have involved nitrogen efficiency trials, including foliar applications of nitrogen products and urea inhibitors, as well as the effects of foliar manganese applications on fiber quality. Ongoing soil fertility work also covers evaluations of nutrient-based plant growth regulators.

Entomology work at Sunbelt will focus on a continued examination of currently recommended thresholds for stinkbugs and the relative effects on yield and fiber quality.

The farm at the Sunbelt Expo has been a pioneer in introducing new cotton-farming technology, with irrigation scheduling in the 1970s and 1980s and transgenic varieties in the 1990s.
