Cotton production expects to touch 26mn bales

Farmers have started harvesting cotton crop while coastal areas of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh harvesting is getting delayed due to irregular rain.

Cotton production to touch new high and this year industry experts estimate cotton yield of 26 million bales (170 kg each) by September 2007.

In year 2005-06, country's cotton production increased 12 percent to 24.2 million bales.

Till now no incident of pest record has been recorded and quality of cotton is also good, local cotton growers stated.

Last year total cotton exports were at 4.6 million of bales of which Gujarat exported 3.9 million of bales to China, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to traders, transgenic varieties of cotton accounted for 90 percent of total yield while in Maharashtra 65 percent of production were under Bt cotton and Bt cotton in Punjab account for 45 percent of total production.
