Demand for cotton yarn is rising rapidly in the domestic industry attracting pouring imports.

In August 2006 while cotton blend yarn imports reached 1,530 tons, 100 percent pure yarn touched 16,017 tons mark, representing year-on-year rise of 32.4 and 20 percent respectively.

During January-July 2006 blend yarn imports surged 56.6 percent to 9,611 tons and 100-percent cotton yarn imports reached 135,644 tons, up 12 percent as compared to the same period last year.

Exports continued to remain weak with 100-percent cotton exports dropping 13.5 percent to only 2,059 tons in the month of August this year.

Although blend yarn exports during the January-September 2006 period recorded slight rise of 18.5 percent to 2625 tons, total cotton shipments fell considerably by 30.8 percent to 15,516 tons.

Top suppliers of cotton yarn are India, Pakistan, China and Indonesia.
