Farmers prepare for lower cotton output

Cotton farmers in Nash and Edgecombe counties are expecting an average crop this year due to bad weather conditions.

An agent informed that bolls had been opening very fast and farmers had not been able to pick up enough bolls so they were unable predict likely total yield.

He said that since cotton lint inside a cotton boll tends to be of best quality when it opens up, farmers were looking to take crop out of the field at the earliest. Production is expected to be at 600 to 700 pounds per acre.

Inconsistent weather has hit the cotton crop badly as the flowering did not start until second and third week of July against last years first week of July time period.
