Due to bad weather, cotton crop projection has been revised by 10.5% to 12.4 million bales in Pakistan which is highly dependent on cotton. The projection has been revised to 12.4 million bales from 13.86 million bales.
Two major cotton- growing provinces Sindh and Punjab had earlier on lowered their projection after studying impact of flood which severely damaged the crops. Large crop was also damaged leaf curl virus which damaged more than 20 percent of crop on more than 250, 000 acres of crop.
Two-third of country's exports consists of cotton and textile which demonstrates the importance of this sector in Pakistan's economic growth. Pakistan expects use of 15 million bales of cotton on domestic front and even after being forth largest producer it has to import two million bales of high grade cotton to meet local demands.
Agricultural Ministry has said that projected output of 12.4 million bales would be almost equal to last year's production. Ministry hopes that last flowering of cotton will boost possibility of higher production than the current estimates.
