JAS urges farmers to produce lint to mint money

Senator Norman Grant, President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), has appealed farmers to produce West Indies Sea Island cotton since it offeres plent of benefits.

He was speaking on the occasion of signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) and the Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation (JADF) at Kingston.

According to him, this cotton sells at US$10 per pound of lint in markets of Japan, United States and Switzerland. He also informed that present demand for lint is expected at $3 million tons a year with Japan alone asking for two million tons.

Grant appreciated the efforts made to enhance the cotton industry and said that JAS was trying to find out farmers who can grow cotton in the area of more than 100 acres.
