Since the second half of 2005, farmers' income relatively increased with cotton price soaring. Hence, this year cotton farmers in Shanxi province are aggressively interested in cotton production, and the cotton planting area in the province grows significantly.
Based on selected spots survey, the total cotton planting area in the province this year is estimated at 1.637 million mu (1 hectare = 15 mu), up 1.75 lakh (12 percent) mu of 1.462 million from last year.
The cotton production for the entire province reached 1.2 lakh tons in 2004, but fell to less one lakh tons in 2005 when being hit by a severe drought.
