The current tense situation regarding cotton picking in Xinjiang is expected to cool down soon, as a bumper harvest is already anticipated to reach total production of 2.18 million tons, rising 11 percent from last year, setting the highest record in history.

In recent years, local Government have made greater efforts in promoting cotton production, and special cash crop planting area featured with cotton accounts for 50 percent of the total crop growing areas, setting up the biggest commercial cotton producing base in China.

Country will invest 750 million yuan to support the construction of high-quality cotton production base in the period of 'the eleventh five year plan'.

Being one of Xinjiang's important industries, for many years cotton industry has successively stayed at the first place in the country for total local production, yield, export percentage, shipment quantity and person's average cotton occupancy.

In 2005, province's cotton output totaled 1.95 million tons, accounting for 30 percent of the whole country's production.
