In January-September 2006, China's cotton import accumulated to 3.1618 million tons, up 75.82 percent from the same period of last year, the total amount recorded US $4.218 billion, an increase of 90.71 percent against the corresponding period in 2005.
In January-September, the average cotton import price was $1.33 per kg, 8.13 percent higher from the same period of the previous year.
China imported 134,300 tons cotton in September, down 53.50 percent on monthly basis, value amount reached $170 million, falling 52.43 percent from last month. The average cotton import price was $1.31 per kg, up 1.55 percent from August.
China's main suppliers were still the US, India, Australia and Uzbekistan.
The US remained the biggest exporter, but China's cotton import from the US obviously decreased to only 55,400 tons in September, 71.81 percent below last month, but accounting for 41.25 percent of the total cotton import in the same period.
In addition to the above-mentioned four countries, China also imported cotton from Mali, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Zambia, Chad, Syria, Zimbabwe, Togo, Spain, Nigeria, Kazakhstan and other countries and regions.
The maim importing provinces and cities in September were Shangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai,Beijing and Guangdong.
Generally, cotton import quantities of all of the leading provinces decreased in September.
Shandong and Jiangsu still represented the top two importing provinces in September, with cotton import of 50200 tons and 21400 tons respectively, down 52.60 percent and 54.56 percent. Cotton import quantities of other importing provinces and cities also reduced.
