ISAAA estimates 8.6mn acres utilized for Bt cotton

According to estimates by International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) approximately 8.6 million acres were used to cultivate Bt cotton.

Earlier in 2005, ISAAA estimated 3.2 million acres to have gone under genetically modified (GM) cotton.

Center has been claiming that only fraction of total area under cotton in the country is used for Bt cotton.

But industry experts revealed that huge percentage out of cotton produced is Bt cotton. Cotton production in the country has significantly increased after depression during 2002-2003.

The Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) estimated in 2003 that three percent of the total crop produced countrywide was Bt cotton. In this Tamil Nadu topped with 18 percent and followed by Gujarat with 6.3 percent.
