Considering the superior quality of cotton in Balochistan and North West Frontier Provinces (NWFP), Pakistan Government plans to shift their focus in these areas.

For promoting cotton cultivation, industry experts, bodies and related departments of Ministry of Agriculture will arrange meetings with growers from these regions.

The scheduled meeting will be attended by Agriculture Development Commissioner Qadir Bux Baloch, Vice President Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) Dr Ibad Badar, Directors of Central Cotton Research Institutes Multan and Sakrund, Director National Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering Faisalabad, besides provincial agriculture authorities of Balochistan including Director General Extension and DG Research.

Discussion on setting up Cotton Research Stations in potential cotton growing areas including Sibi, Loralai, Uthal, Kharan and Baghbana will also be considered.

Balochistan produces around 0.1 million bales of cotton per annum with three ginning factories operating there.

Cotton production target last year from both the regions was 15 million bales against actual production of 12.5 million bales.

The production in Punjab was 10.25 million bales against a target of 11.65 million bales as there was a decline in cultivated area and due to lower per acre yield. Sindh had a target of 3.25 million bales but could produce only 2.65 million bales.
