As the cotton purchase centers were slow for the procurement, resentment among the growers aggravated.
The police had to fire on cotton growers who were violently protesting on this issue, at Wani in Yavatmal district. This led to the death of one farmer.
The incident forced Government to take some constructive steps towards this issue.
Sources revealed that the state-run cotton marketing federation would speed up procurement of cotton and number of purchase centres would be increased from 158 to 200.
The cotton prices are falling at the home front as well as international markets. But the state would purchase the product at minimum price to support the farmers from facing further problems due to price fall.
The state expects a yield of 30 million quintals of cotton this season from an area of around 3.1 million hectares.
