Muhammad Arshad Khan Lodhi, Punjab Minister for Agriculture, informed that three new cotton seed varieties have been approved by Punjab Seed Council (PSC). Higher yield potential of these varieties could revolutionize the agricultural economy.
He was chairperson at a PSC meeting. He stated that Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan (CCRI) has developed the first variety CIM-534 which resists temperature, virus and pest assaults.
Second PSC approved variety MNH-786 having the plus points of pest and disease resistance, early maturing and high yield potential was also grown by CCRI.
National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Faisalabad (NIBGE) has evolved the third type of seed NIBJI-2 which is leaf curl virus, pest attack and drought resistant.
Lodhi further stated that PSC would make the newly approved seed types commercially available after multiplying them for next two years.
