Vidarbha cotton growers have struggled to make ends meet for past year. Surprising number of distressed farmers committed suicide. On Sunday at a meeting in Kolzari village, Yavatmal, over 70-80 families decided not to take up cotton farming in 2007 unless the price hiked.
Cotton growing requires a much higher cost as well as hard labour and since the market price is low, it does not give adequate returns.
This meeting brought out strong sentiments from the farmers who are on the verge of starving. Other neighboring settlements applauded this initiative and would adopt the 'No price, no crop' resolve.
