Cotton production reaches lowest level in 27 years

Society of Cotton Gin Industries of Khorasan Province stated in a letter to the Agricultural Jihad Minister Mohammad Reza Eskandari that cotton production plunge to its lowest level in the past 27 years.
In its letter, the Society of Cotton Gin Industries pointed out problems faced by cotton industry and also urged for the allocation of subsidies to cotton growers.
It also mentioned about rising prices of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, water etc. that led to increase in the price of finished goods.
The society also thanked Ministry for rejecting reduction of import tariff on cotton.
According to latest survey, cotton cultivation area reduced to 26,705 hectares in 1987 compared to 233,014 hectares a year earlier.
Experts are of the opinion that incentives to farmers would help increase cotton production to 5,00,000 tons per year.
The provinces of Mazandaran, Khorasan, Fars, Markazi, East Azarbaijan, Tehran, Kermanshah, Semnan, Kerman and the cities of Gorgan and Gonbad are engaged in cotton cultivation.
