Govt stresses improvement in cotton production

In order to enhance cotton production, Government has taken on going campaign to Benue, as its cultivation is declining drastically.

The Cotton Development Committee wanted farmers to return to cotton production to tackle decadence faced by textile sector.

Experts believe that cotton production can be increased only if cotton farmers take advantage of Governments willingness to supply improved crop seeds.

Reliance on the oil industry also played a major role in the decline of the cotton production.

Government is trying to revive the cotton production because it has huge potential to boost national economy.

Cotton which is known as white gold, the leaf can serve as livestock feed, the stem bark for rope making, the stem as pulp for paper making, the lint or fluffy fuzz, a foreign exchange earner, is spurn into yarn by textile mills for assorted products, the seed is used for edible vegetable oil and seed cake.

In Nigeria, about 250, 000 farmers are involved in cotton production and additional 30,000 persons in textile and garment industry.
