With weather warming up, spring planting in Xinjiang Autonomous Region is in full swing. As a major economic crop, cotton is still the first choice for farmers.
By now, Region has in all planted over 22 million mu, of which, cotton acreage is over 14 million mu, up 4 million mu from last year, (one hectare = 15 Chinese mu).
China produced 6.73 million tons of cotton in 2006, an increase of 17.8 percent over the previous year, set an all-time high.
Ministries of Finance and Agriculture issued a notice in February, appropriating funds of 500 million yuan as quality cotton seed subsidies in 2007, with an average of 15 yuan per mu, covering Xinjiang and eight major cotton-producing provinces.
