Major textile players are urging the Government to finalize rules and regulations on sowing of Bt cotton, as soon as possible.

Leading experts suggest that adequate financial aid should be allocated for research and study of Bt cotton, so as to avoid any harmful effects on the environment.

Chief traders should come together and analyze various aspects of Bt cotton and its effects on environment as well as discuss the national integrated pest management (IPM) programme.

Dr Rozina Tufail, member parliamentary standing committee on food, agriculture and livestock, recently, announced that, under the proposed rules, state-owned research institutes and private businesses would be able to apply for environment ministry's approval for planting BT cotton.

This would also pave way for enterprises to seek approval before dealing in Bt cotton.

Sources say that Ministry was planning to set aside Rs4-5 billion for research in agriculture and livestock sectors.
