Three major cotton-growing regions — Xinjiang, Huanghuai and Jinghua in China — are expected to produce better yields this year. Plants have started flowering in July.

According to latest estimates by China Cotton Association, national cotton planting areas covered 82.65 million mu in 2007, a growth of 2.1 percent compared to last year. Of this, Xinjiang cotton areas marked 20.47 mu, representing an increase of 7.6 percent over last year.

Even if few parts of cotton areas in Huanghuai and Jinghua valley suffered storm attacks and floods, affecting the cotton growth, sunshine and temperature in other areas were ideal and thus helped balance the flowering of cotton.

Countrywide cotton growth is better than last year; cotton yield is expected to create new highs with an estimate output of around 7.1 million tons.

New cotton is expected to arrive in market by mid-September compared to previous years as cotton burgeons were earlier in most areas. By mid-August, some growers in Hubei, Anhui, Shanxi started to sell scattered new cotton at the price of around 2.70 to 2.90 yuan per Chinese Jin.
