President Jakaya Kikwete recently concluded 8-day tour of the Shinyanga region. During his visit he assured the regional leaders that the Government would provide maximum support to cotton farming.
However, he also stressed that the industry should concentrate on exporting value added cotton products instead of raw-cotton.
“You have to stretch further than just exporting the crop (in its raw form); you have to think about producing cotton yarn and thereafter garments,” he said.
He said that Shinyanga produces almost 60 percent of cotton in Tanzania and mutual cooperation among industry players as well as Government authorities will help the region achieve great heights.
Kikwete also said that Government was inviting investors for mining industry. Shinyanga is a region rich in gold and diamonds. President further stated, “We are working hard to develop small scale miners and urging major mining companies which have invested in the country to assist them.”
