Following the advice of scientists from Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC), sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, farmers in Kutch diversified from planting traditional crops to sowing cotton.

As a result, compared to the previous 58,000 hectares, cotton sowing this year covered more than 65,000 hectares in talukas like Anjar, Abdasa, Mandvi, Mundra, Rapar, Bhuj and Nakhatrana.

This diversification got excellent results as cotton yield in Kutch this year was 6.50 lakh bales. This is roughly double compared to last year's production of 3 lakh bales.

Coupled with the availability of good ginning factories here, premium quality Kutch cotton is expected to fetch as much as Rs 1,000 crore for its farmers.

Kutch farmers have given top priority to Bt cotton, which has given good yield per acre. Again, Kutch cotton brings in higher prices compared to cotton from other areas because of the saline water available in Kutch, which is best suited for this crop.
