According to a forecast based on sample survey by Hebei National Bureau Investigation Corps, cotton production in the region this year will increase in terms of sown area and total output compared to previous year.

The study shows that Hebei Province's cotton sowing area will reach 957.02 million mu (one hectare = 15 Chinese mu) this year, up 2.4 percent over last year. Estimated yield will be 69.1 kilograms per mu, an increase of 2.8 percent, the highest till date. Expected overall output will be 661,000 tons, with a boost of 5.3 percent.

The reason behind higher cotton output this year is increase in areas for cotton sowing and higher prices of cotton has aroused the enthusiasm of local farmers in planting cotton. Net income from cotton plantation reached 766.55 yuan per mu in the last year, much higher than the wheat and corn.

The second reason for the improved cotton output is higher yield per unit area. Another reason behind this expected growth is that cotton plants in most areas received adequate light, abundant rainfall, new varieties, strengthened field management and better pest and disease control.
