Textile sector of Pakistan has been urging the Government to allow import of all kinds of cotton from India through land-route of Wahga border. With regard to this exporters are planning to hold a meeting with the ministry of agriculture.

Although, the Government had allowed the import of long staple cotton through the Wahga border, exporters want permission for short and medium term staple as well.

Exporters are of the view that a projected target of US $19.20 billion would not be achievable largely because of scarcity of required raw materials, which has created a huge crisis in the textile sector.

Exporters also demanded the termination of import levies on manmade fibres and raw materials brought from any country. Government has been charged for implementing inefficient and inapplicable tax policies that have resulted in the break down of the cottage industry. A twin consequence has been a tremendous amount of difficulty on part of the exporters to access cheaper raw material for value addition and export.

It is believed that the situation is likely to deteriorate even further causing a decline of 35 percent in machinery imports.
