Cotton imports slide in volume but climb in value

According to customs statistics, China's cotton imports in the first three quarters reached 1.898 million tons, worth of US $2.62 billion, down 40 percent and 37.8 percent from the same period last year. The main features are as follows:

First, cotton imports were mainly in general trade. In the first three quarters, cotton imports in general trade mode registered 763,000 tons, down 52.9 percent, accounting for 40.2 percent of the total cotton imports.

Second, China's cotton imports were mainly from the US, India and Uzbekistan. During the first three quarters, cotton imports from the US were 936,000 tons, down 41.9 percent, imports from India were 416,000 tons, down 11.5 percent, and imports from Uzbekistan were down 39 percent. Imports from the three countries together accounted for 81.5 percent of the country's total cotton imports.

Third, cotton import sizes of state-owned enterprises, collective enterprises and private enterprises were similar. During the first three quarters, cotton imports made by state-owned enterprises, collective enterprises and private enterprises were 572,000 tons, 478,000 tons and 450,000 tons, respectively, representing a decrease of 58.6 percent, 29.9 percent and 23 percent.

Fourth, the overall average price of cotton imports rose in a concussion situation. During the first three quarters, China's cotton import price averaged at $1,382 per ton, up 3.6 percent.

Monthly average import price increased from $1346 per ton in January to $1490 per ton in September. Of which September price set a new high of China's single month average price in cotton imports since this year.
