Farmers producing cotton in Gujarat are facing tough times dealing with the harsh treatments rendered by the Government. They have taken an almost radical stance towards the authority that has been showing a completely indifferent attitude towards the growing adversities of the manufacturers.
While the Central Government had directed the state authorities to fix the cotton price at Rs500 per 20 kilogram, it has been affixed at Rs411. Consequently, cotton trade in more than 22 marketplaces in Saurashtra has come to a standstill.
Farmers have refused to step back unless the Government offers them the right price for their produce. Situation in Jamnagar, Amreli, Rajkot and Junagadh is not any different.
The farmers union in Gujarat had decided to disallow the passage of any cotton carrying truck starting from December 5. Conditions are likely to deteriorate unless some very concrete steps are taken to safeguard the interests of cotton producers in the country.
