Officials from Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean Inc. (ECCI) revealed that this year the cotton harvest has produced lint 28,000 pounds less compared to the previous year.
In 2005, the cotton crop produced nearly 70,000 pounds of lint compared to which the produce this year has been quite disappointing and the major fault can be attributed to heavy rainfall and pests that have caused considerable damage to the crop.
The company, however, expects a better harvest in the coming season but has urged the fellow member to adopt modern technology for growing cotton and to prevent pests.
Adaptation to satellite imagery, plant growth regulation and water management has been suggested by experts from the industry. However, a major obstacle in the way of incorporating these measures is lack of financial support.
Nonetheless ECCI has been constantly trying to improve the quality and quantity of the cotton produce since West Indies Sea Island Cotton is one of the rarest in the world, attracting local as well as regional buyers.
