In January 2009, Vietnamese textile and garment industry imported 13,000 tons of cotton totaling to US$18.4 million, a drop of 54.1 percent in volume and 54.4 percent in value, when corresponded with the same period of 2008.
During the month, cotton imports turnover from the US reached 8,100 tons amounting to $11.7 million, rising by 21.5 and 28.8 percent in volume and value, respectively, when compared with January of 2008.
Imports from Brazil stood at 1,100 tons for $1.69 million, skyrocketing by 110.4 and 126.7 percent in volume and value respectively. Imports from Singapore also surged by 175.5 percent in volume and 121.9 percent in value.
It is noteworthy to note that India which stood second in cotton import rankings in 2008, has witnessed a sharp decline in falling to just 480 tons and $772,500, a precarious drop of 95.2 percent in volume and 94.6 percent in value.
The import prices of the first month of 2009, when compared with those prevailing in January 2008, fell marginally by just 0.5 percent and stood between $885 to $1,610 per ton, depending on quality on an average.
