Against 10.3 million under cotton cultivation recorded in the previous cotton year in India, the 2010-11 season, is witnessing a record cotton sowing area of 10.6 million hectares. In the process, India has beaten a old US record, whose acreage in 1934 stood at 10.4 million hectares.

This was informed to fibre2fashion by a reputed cotton expert, who gave more details by saying, “The major cotton producing areas are in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The maximum acreage in Maharashtra is contributed by Vidarbha region, wherein in the 2010-11 season, it stands at four million hectares against 3.5 million hectares, last season”.

He added by saying that, “The total cotton acreage in India will increase by 250,000-300,000 in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, when cotton is sowed in the rabi season, which will take the all-India cotton acreage to nearly 11.0 million hectares”.
