Growing of eco-friendly or organic cotton has not been successful in Swaziland due to the presence of a large number of pests, according to TechnoServe, an organization which helps entrepreneurial men and women in poor areas of the developing world to build businesses.
TechnoServe had started a two-year trial to grow organic cotton in Swaziland in 2006, but it had to stop the project as it did not yield satisfactory results. During the demo project, TechnoServe found that there is a three to four years learning curve.
TechnoServe, however, said that it is ready to try again provided some company comes forward to help the farmers.
No chemicals or pesticides are used in growing organic cotton, which is now being grown in India for nearly seven decades.
Few years ago, Tex-Ray Industrial, an African textile company, had announced a project for growing of organic cotton, but the project is yet to start.
