Organic cotton knitting yarn FOB prices drop 35% in south India

Organic cotton knitting yarn free on board (FOB) prices have experienced a significant drop of 35 per cent in south India over the past year. The product was traded at $6.42 per kg in September 2022 but declined to $4.15 per kg, indicating sluggish demand in the international market. 

In September 2022, the FOB price of organic cotton knitting yarn 40/1 combed initially eased to $6.34 per kg. However, prices fell sharply in subsequent weeks to $5.19 per kg by the first week of October 2022. The rates remained range-bound until February 2022, then dropped to $4.83 per kg. The product further declined gradually to $4.15 per kg by the end of August 2023, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro. 

In domestic terms, the price of organic knitting yarn (40/1 combed) was recorded at ₹487.11 per kg in the last week of August 2022. It decreased by 31.21 per cent to ₹335.13 per kg by August 2023. Prices experienced a sharp drop between September and November 2022 but stabilised and declined gradually in the following months. 

Similarly, in north India, this yarn (30/1 combed) was priced at $5.93 per kg (FOB) in the last week of August 2022. It initially surged to $6.95 per kg in mid-September 2022 but fell to $4.77 per kg by the first week of October 2022. Prices continued to fall, reaching $3.76 per kg in the last week of August 2023, marking a 36.59 per cent drop over the year, as per TexPro. 

In the domestic market of north India, prices for organic cotton knitting yarn (30/1 combed) displayed a similar trend. Prices were ₹453.40 per kg in the last week of August 2022 and slipped to ₹371.91 per kg by the first week of October 2022. Eventually, the prices fell to ₹301.96 per kg by the last week of August 2023, a 33.55 per cent decrease over the year.
