The Pakistani Government has been advised by a special committee on agriculture to restore regulatory duty on import of cotton to prevent its massive import and dumping and protect local farmers. The committee also suggested the commerce ministry to explore scope of an indicative price mechanism and a viable implementation plan after consulting stakeholders.
A set of pre-budget recommendations made to the government was circulated among the members of the committee during a meeting presided over by speaker of National Assembly Asad Qaiser.The Pakistan Government has been advised by a special committee on agriculture to restore regulatory duty on import of cotton to prevent its massive import and dumping and protect local farmers. The committee's other recommendations included abolition of the gas infrastructure development cess (GIDC) and no additional taxes on pesticides and fertilizers, imposition of regulatory duties on competing agricultural products of Pakistan, and a stringent price regulation mechanism to control the price of agriculture inputs, according to Pakistani media reports.
The committee was also of the view that exemptions should be granted on equipment and machinery supplied to agriculture research institution for research purposes. (DS)
