Pakistan will soon introduce cotton cluster villages to promote the crop by ensuring use of modern technology, minister for national food security and research Syed Fakhar Imam recently said. He said a million bales of the crop helped generate Rs 97.5 billion and the government has set a target of 10 million bales during the ongoing season.

The minister was briefing media persons at the Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) in Multan. Last year, the country had to import 4.5 million bales of cotton for domestic use.

He said cotton cluster villages comprising two to four union councils would be introduced in different areas and special focus is being given to seed quality, enhancing sowing area, mechanisation and up-gradation of research institutes, according to a news agency.
