  • The marketing year 2023-24 saw an exceptional increase in cotton arrivals in Pakistan, totalling 8.396 million bales, marking a 70.94 per cent surge from the previous year.
  • This significant growth is attributed to early sowing and favourable weather conditions, contrasting the prior year's production challenges due to heavy rains and floods.
The closing figure for cotton arrivals in Pakistan in marketing year 2023-24 reached 8.396 million bales of 170 kg each. This represents a 70.94 per cent leap from the prior year's aggregate of 4.912 million bales, highlighting an exceptional year-on-year growth as documented in the conclusive arrival data provided by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

Cotton influx typically begins in August each year. However, in this marketing year, it started in July due to early sowing and favourable weather conditions, positively impacting the crop. This contrasts starkly with the previous year when heavy rains and floods severely affected cotton production in the main cotton-producing states.

A provincial breakdown of the data showed that Sindh province recorded cotton arrivals of 4.114 million bales from July 2023 to March 2024, which was 118.99 per cent higher than the 1,879,019 bales recorded until March 31, 2023. Meanwhile, Punjab witnessed the arrival of 4,281,779 lakh bales, compared to 3,033,050 bales as of March 31, 2023. There was very little arrival in March, as the season was ending.
