Urging Indian textile industry leaders not to push the government to intervene, textiles minister Piyush Goyal cautioned cotton bale traders not to manipulate prices or hoard to make unfair profits. “Resolve the cotton pricing issue in the spirit of collaboration rather than competition," he said, adding too much dependence on government support is not healthy for the robust growth of the manufacturing sector.

The minister, who also holds the portfolios of commerce & industry, consumer affairs and food & public distribution, was intervening to resolve issues regarding cotton yarn prices between cotton yarn manufacturers and the downstream industry.

Pricing issue of cotton bales and yarn for the industry should not be allowed in any manner to affect better prices that farmers are getting, he was quoted as saying in an official release.

“No one should force the government to intervene. Let free and fair market forces play out. Super normal profits should not be booked for short-term goals”, he added.
