Necessity may be the mother of invention, but no one will tell you that she has to dress like one.
Just ask the owners of Texas apparel start-up MYFN Jeans - they'll be the first to tell you that cool denim and cooler music have moved beyond the teen set. In fact, today's Moms and Aunties and their Gen X and Baby Boomer friends are just as passionate about their wardrobe, their music and their self-expression as the younger crowd ... and maybe more so.
In 2009, a wardrobe purge and preparations for a classic rock concert in Dallas quickly and unexpectedly turned Houston resident Cherie McEnery and her business partner Jeff Dewey into fledgling fashion entrepreneurs.
"Choosing the right outfit for this great night of music just wasn't coming together ... and then these old, wonderful clothes just jumped out at me," said McEnery. "We weren't ready to give up those memories, and it hit me that we didn't have to -- I could wear them all like I wear my favorite pair of jeans."
The first pair of MYFN Jeans evolved from two old T-shirts, a worn bandanna, and a couple of beloved caps sewn onto McEnery's favorite pair of threadbare jeans. And the positive reaction to this one-of-a-kind denim statement surprised them at the concert, at dinner a week later and in a comedy club the week after that. These self-described jeans junkies knew that this was a fun-turned-fashion idea they had to share with other denim lovers with an appreciation for classic music and vintage bands from the 60s and 70s.
Debuting this fall in boutiques with representation by Paul Williams Group, MYFN Jeans expects its boyfriend cut, loose hem and lightweight Cotton/Spandex (98/2) blend to gain broad appeal with women ages 25-50.
"No two pairs of MYFN Jeans are alike - they fit like you've worn them forever, and the quality makes them perfect for a night on the town or a special get together," said Letha Thompson of Paul Williams Group. "And it's even better that they also express something more personal like your taste in music and treasured memories of a time worth revisiting. These unique designs are inspired and created by real people from real experiences - so anyone and everyone can enjoy them."
