E-commerce platforms in China are trying to make the upcoming Singles’ Day shopping on November 11 a lot ‘greener’. Companies like JD.com and Tmall are taking actions to promote ‘low carbon’ activities and products. Even logistics arms of these companies such as Cainiao Network are encouraging their customers to recycle and reuse their parcel boxes.

As part of its going greener, JD.com has developed recycling packaging, deployed new-energy logistics cargo vans, and is using photovoltaic power generation in warehousing, according to reports in the Chinese media.

On the other hand, Tmall is issuing green vouchers worth 100 million yuan (approximately $15.6 million) in its bid to encourage consumers to buy energy-efficient home appliances and products with ‘green’ certification. The company is doing this to support China’s carbon reduction goals.

Cainiao Network is reducing overpackaging with the help of big data and artificial intelligence. Its 60,000 courier stations are encouraging 100 million consumers to recycle and reuse parcel boxes.

The Singles' Day is one of the largest online shopping sprees worldwide. It was first launched by Tmall in 2009.
