Italian gross domestic product (GDP) was stationary quarter on quarter (QoQ) on an average in the third quarter (Q3) this year, achieving a result comparable to that of Germany and falling below the averages for the euro area, France and Spain, according to preliminary estimates by the official statistical agency Istat.

The performance of exports during the summer months, despite a contraction in August, was overall favourable (plus 1.2 per cent QoQ), while imports experienced a slight decline (minus 0.3 per cent QoQ).

The seasonally-adjusted index of industrial production (IIP) in September increased by 2.8 per cent compared to August, thereby compensating for the significant decline observed in the preceding month (minus 2.7 per cent). Nonetheless, the index recorded a 0.5-per cent QoQ decrease in Q3 2025, an Istat release said.

Employment in the country increased in September, with growth limited to female employees and all age groups except for individuals aged 35-49. By professional category, employment increased among permanent employees, decreased among temporary workers, and remained relatively stable among self-employed individuals.

In October, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) demonstrates, according to preliminary estimates, a year-on-year increase of 1.3 per cent, which is lower than the euro area average of 2.1 per cent and signifies a considerable slowdown in comparison to the preceding months.
