The executive committee of Bangladesh's National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved establishment of Begum Amina Mansoor Textile Engineering Institute at Kazipur in Sirajganj district at a cost of Tk 87.46 crore ($11.1 million).

Bangladesh currently has 120 textile institutes from where 22,800 textile technologists would graduate in the current fiscal. However, the number of graduating textile technologists is less than the demand of more than 36,000, Bangladeshi media reported.

The new textile institute would produce 180 mid-level textile technologists.

At its first meeting in fiscal 2016-17, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, the ECNEC also approved Tk 41.58 crore ($5.3 million) for modernisation, renovation and expansion of the existing cloth processing centre at Madhabdi in Narsingdi district. The project cost has been increased from the original estimate of Tk 32.32 crore.

Another project approved was setting up of the BSCIC industrial city in Bhairab at a cost of Tk 72.91 crore, revised from the original Tk 58.4 crore. (RKS)
