Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Coal India Limited (CIL) have solidified their partnership in the realm of energy diversification with the establishment of "Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited" (BCGCL). This joint venture, aimed at venturing into the burgeoning coal to chemicals sector, was formalised through a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) signed on February 28, 2024.

BCGCL, incorporated as a Private Limited Company on May 21, 2024, is set to spearhead innovative approaches in coal utilisation, marking a significant stride towards sustainable industrial practices. With an authorised capital of ₹11 crore ($1.32 million) and an initial paid-up capital of ₹1 lakh ($1,200), BCGCL is poised to leverage the expertise and resources of both BHEL and CIL. The venture is structured with CIL holding a majority 51 per cent equity stake, while BHEL holds the remaining 49 per cent.

The primary objective of BCGCL is to engage in coal gasification processes, producing syn-gas, ammonia, nitric acid as intermediate products, and ammonium nitrate as the end product, the entities said.

Key regulatory approvals from bodies such as NITI Aayog and DIPAM have been secured, underscoring the government's support for initiatives.
