Efforts of leading British fashion retailers to reduce the environmental and social impact of the clothes and shoes they sell include sourcing more sustainable materials, designing products that are made to last and encouraging customers to return unwanted clothes for reuse, according to Peter Andrews, sustainability head at the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Andrews said this in his response to a query on the issue sent by the chair of the environmental audit committee and member of British parliament Mary Creagh to the chief executives of leading fashion retailers.

Due to efforts of leading fashion retailers, many of the clothes being bought now have lower individual environmental impacts, Andrews said in his response. (DS)
