In Punjab, nearly 100 percent of the area under wheat cultivation is covered by canal water flowing through the state. Only a part in the Kandi belt is reported to be dependent on rain for rabi crops.
Chandrima Chatterjee, economist, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry told that current sowing was good, unless frost bites take its toll on cotton harvest India may have a surplus.
It is estimated that nearly 33 lakh hectares had already been covered under wheat crop. Only crops sown in 60,000 hectares, are currently dependent on rain water, while the rest is fed by canals. The state is likely to achieve the target of 76 lakh tonne of wheat this year.
