Polythene is injurious to environment, said Soma Kumari Thennakoon, Chairman, Laksala and therefore the government owned leading handicraft enterprise Laksala has decided not to use polythene.

The country has extensively used polythene as packaging material and this has caused sizeable harm to the environment.

Laksala will only use eco-friendly wrappers in the future and the enterprise will also request all government institutions to use eco-friendly packaging material.

The Handicrafts Board of Sri Lanka has already opened 12 centres to produce packaging material using local raw materials.
