The Ministry of Environmental Protection has issued an administrative stop order for the prevention or reduction of marine pollution to Delta Textiles due to recurrent violations and significant deviations from the conditions stipulated in the discharge permit granted to the factory.

According to the order, the factory will no longer be permitted to discharge industrial wastewater to the sea as of August 30, 2007 at 12:00 pm, according to its existing discharge permit. Inter alia, the order lists the deviations from the discharge criteria which were discovered during the course of wastewater sampling in 2006 and 2007.

The director of the Marine and Coastal Environment Division in the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Mr. Rani Amir, said that the ministry took this unusual step when it became apparent that the warnings issued to the industrial plant and the hearing held in its presence did not yield the expected results.

The plant still does not comply with the conditions stipulated in its discharge permit to sea and the quality of its wastewater remains lower than the criteria set in the permit.
